Frequently asked questions....

When is the best time to visit Merimbula?

The best time to visit Merimbula depends on the type of holiday you're looking for, as every season offers something unique on the Sapphire Coast.

Summer (December to February)

Summer is the most popular time to visit Merimbula. Warm temperatures, long sunny days, and crystal-clear waters make it ideal for swimming, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, boating, and family beach holidays. Popular beaches such as Main Beach Merimbula and Bar Beach are at their best during summer.

Best for: Beach holidays, water sports, families, Christmas and school holiday travel.

Autumn (March to May)

Many locals consider autumn the best time to visit Merimbula. The ocean remains warm from summer, crowds are smaller, and the weather is often mild and stable. It's an excellent time for coastal walks, cycling, fishing, golfing, and exploring the wider Sapphire Coast region.

Best for: Couples, outdoor adventures, fishing, quieter holidays.

Winter (June to August)

Winter brings crisp mornings, sunny days, and one of Merimbula's most spectacular natural events—whale watching. Humpback whales migrate along the coast and can often be spotted from headlands, beaches, and lookouts. Winter is also a great time to enjoy local cafés, restaurants, galleries, and scenic drives.

Best for: Whale watching, nature lovers, photography, relaxing escapes.

Spring (September to November)

Spring sees the Sapphire Coast come alive with wildflowers, migrating whales, and comfortable temperatures. It's a fantastic time for bushwalking, cycling, birdwatching, fishing, and exploring national parks. Visitors can enjoy the region before the peak summer crowds arrive.

Best for: Nature enthusiasts, active travellers, sightseeing, road trips.

Overall Recommendation

If you're looking for warm weather and beach activities, visit between December and March. For fewer crowds and pleasant conditions, March to May and September to November are often considered the ideal times to visit. For whale watching, plan your trip between June and November.

The good news is that Merimbula is a true year-round destination. Whether you're seeking pristine beaches, fresh seafood, coastal adventures, wildlife encounters, or a relaxing getaway, there's never a bad time to visit Merimbula.
