About the Event
“An absolute must see… an astounding piece of theatre” – Australian Arts Review.
Award-winning and critically-acclaimed solo theatre show ‘The Will To Be’ is set to tour across regional NSW this year including to The Twyford in Merimbula on Sunday 16 June at 3pm.
The intimate story of sacrifice and forbidden love most recently performed to two sold out crowds at Cooma Little Theatre, following a remounted Melbourne season at La Mama Courthouse as part of Midsumma Festival.
Prior to this, ‘The Will To Be’ was awarded a Best Theatre Weekly Award at the 2020 Adelaide Fringe Festival, receiving five and four-and-a-half star reviews. Since its premiere at the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival, the one-man show has been hailed as “a masterful performance” (Stage Whispers) and “compelling and must-see theatre” (Melbourne Observer).
‘The Will To Be’ is set in a university office in 1962 and tells the story of junior lecturer William O’Halloran who is dismissed from his position due to his homosexuality, which was illegal at the time. The play is an exploration of queer history, societal shame and forbidden love in 1960s Australia and is laced with the words of Shakespeare.
