SOUTH EAST FORESTS NATIONAL PARK
Take a drive a little further afield and explore South East Forests National Park, a great place to enjoy some quiet time with nature - there's usually few people in this massive park that covers an area of 115,534 ha and over 100km of coastal escarpment. You'll find extensive areas of forests, numerous streams, small waterfalls and waterholes, wetlands, gorges, cliffs and lots of big views.
Encompassing the former Genoa, Tantawangalo, Coolangubra, Bemboka and Yowaka National Parks, the area was amalgamated into South East Forests National Park in 2001.
Native habitats support several rare and endangered species including the long-footed potoroo, southern brown bandicoot, smoky mouse, yellow-bellied glider, tiger quoll and the powerful, masked and sooty owls.
With considerable old growth forests and many points of entry, the park provides an alternative to busier coastal areas and a real sense of adventure and 'getting away from it all'. There's ample opportunities for walking, picnicking and camping in beautiful settings ranging from complete wilderness to upgraded areas that include toilets, picnic tables, boardwalks and viewing platforms.
Travel the many roads and trails in a vehicle, 4WD or take the mountain bikes. Most roads are 2wd accessible to the designated location unless marked.
