MERIMBULA LAKE

Right on the doorstep of the town centre is stunning Merimbula Lake with a plethora of activities to enjoy both in and out of the water.

One of the most beautiful estuaries in NSW, Merimbula Lake is an inlet & estuary system consisting of a natural entrance, inlet channel,  a large medium depth basin and a much smaller shallow basin on the southern end.

The lake sea level is elevated at 0.25 m above mean sea level.  There is no record of the bar entrance ever having been closed, although it can be particularly shallow at low tide, preventing passage of larger vessels, as storms and changing conditions alter the sands of the entrance.

Oysters have been farmed in Merimbula Lake since the 1920’s with large tidal exchanges keeping the estuary in good condition allowing farmers to harvest oysters from the lake for direct sale.

Head to the boat ramp on Arthur Kaine Drive and pop the boat in to explore the top lake, launch your kayak or SUP and get up close to sea life, birds and rays as you glide around the estuary.  Lace up your comfy shoes and take a stroll around Merimbula Boardwalk, an all-year-round activity loved by visitors and locals.

You'll find wonderful swimming at Mitchies Jetty and Spencer Park in the summer.  Merimbula Lake is an integral part of the Merimbula experience!
